Abstract

Fluctuations in annual leader growth were observed in several stands. These are shown to be related to summations of air temperature squared in both the current and previous growing season for pine stands, and to that in the previous growing season only, for spruce stands. A method of adjusting observed leader length to compensate for the· effect of climate is demonstrated. The usefulness of this method for assessing fertiliser response or possible damage due to pests and diseases are discussed.
